More Ideas

Are you a reporter for your school newspaper? Or, are you a high school newspaper editor? Are you searching for some captivating article ideas? Searching for article ideas other than the upcoming school play and the prom queen nominations? Here are some high school newspaper article ideas
that will interest your readers.

High School Newspaper Article Idea #1: Interview a Successful Alumnus of Your High School

One article idea is to contact and interview a successful alumnus of your high school. It doesn't have to be someone famous, it could be a successful business owner in the area, a doctor, dentist, entrepreneur, attorney, accountant or more. To find an alumnus to interview, you might post a request on Facebook or Myspace alumni groups, or ask teachers for suggestions. (Alternately, if you are from a small town, you should just call local business owners and ask if they graduated from the high school.)

Ask the alumnus questions such as "What advice do you have for teens today?", and "Who was your favorite teacher?" Be sure to ask what activities they were involved in at high school, and suggest they share a school memory. Try to include some humor. It would be perfect if you could include their high school photo along with a current photo today.

High School Newspaper Article Idea #2: Part Time Job Ideas

A second article idea is to write an article about part time (or summer) job suggestions.. Interview a few students who have part time jobs at fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, baby-sitting, etc. Discuss the pros and cons, job stress, and the difficulties that some students may face trying to balance work and school. You might ask a teacher where he/she worked in high school, and ask him/her to share what he/she learned from his job experience. This is an excellent, informative article idea.

Article Idea #3
Is there an exchange student at your school this year? This is a great time to interview him or her. Ask basic questions such as hobbies, where they are from, how they like it here, etc. You might also ask them about how the culture is different, and anything odd they've noticed since
they've been in America. This is a simple article that should not take too long to complete.

High School Newspaper Article Idea #4: Guess the Teacher's Baby Photo

Okay, so this one is not an article, but it's a pretty cool feature. Ask teachers from your school to share a photo of themselves as a baby or young child. Try to get at least ten teachers to participate. It can be a contest, or just for fun, with the answers to who's who upside down. It will definitely be entertaining for the readers to try to figure out which teacher had a lot of baby fat, cute dimples, or more.

High School Newspaper Article Idea #5: Teen Suicide Prevention

This is a serious, but very important topic. Write an article about teenage suicide statistics, warning signs that a friend is suicidal, and what to do if you are feeling suicidal. It is best to interview a mental health professional. Most cities and large towns have a local suicide / crisis hotline. They will have lots of information to share with you. It is ideal to call them first.

If there is not one in your area, call the local state mental health social services agency. (In Texas it is called MHMR.) You might call 211, (like 911, but with a 2) from a land line phone and ask them if there is an agency in the area who can provide teen suicide information for you article. If there is not, you should try contacting a local psychologist or psychiatrist. An outstanding resource to visit is www.hopeline.com.

These are just five article ideas for your high school, or middle school newspaper. For more article ideas, search through past issues for suggestions.
