Agenda Thursday, Sept. 3 Sotacrat & Chronicle

Welcome to Creative Journalism!

We're going to start right away with writing articles for the Sotacrat and Chronicle online.

First, we're going to visit last year's newspaper and look it over. Lots of work to do to make it successful this year and keep it going.

Next, we're going to take a look at the ASNE national edition and get some ideas for our own newspaper from that.

Let's begin to generate ideas for articles and start writing. Post them as comments to this post.

Next class, we'll try to build our staff. So, start thinking about what role you want to play on our SOTA school newspaper online. We'll talk about staff positions and the different sections of the newspaper and what they do.

  2. there was a article about teens not being invincible. the article was about teens consuming fast food after every day of the week after school. it discussed that the toxins in the fast food can harm are bodies in the long run.

there was another article about a student who witnessed a crash that involved one of the drivers texting. the student also discussed how the texting ban was formed. he said that it was a father who lost his daughter heather, and she was texting while driving, and unfortunately, her life was taken.

  3. i liked the one about the teen parenting challenge because i like to hear ppls stories on their challenge of raising children while they are still children themselves. its very interesting to see what they go through when raising a child of their own. i also liked the article about the dance called the "Jerk". i liked this article because its about a very popular modern day dance thats fun to do. i liked this article because its talking about something that kids our age are really interested in and gets thm involved in whats going on.

  4. I enjoyed the article called "Are you a Jerk?" I liked it because it talked about a topic and dance that a lot of my friends are doing in school. It's called jerkin, it is a new dance getting very popular for teens. I also liked the article about texting because that is an issue that is getting a lot of attention in America because of the high total of accidents and deaths because of people texting while they are driving.

  7. I enjoyed the article "Majority isn't Always Right" because it was an important issue, with information given in an interesting way. It was also well-written. Another article that caught my eye was "Cheaters Never Win" because I found the subject matter interesting. It also adresses a relevent issue. If we could I think we should publish articles like these, particularly the former.

  8. I preferred the articles on the chick flick movies. /though a lot of the films tend to be cheesy to me the Time Traveler's Wife expresses trials and tribulations that the couple had to go through but they stuck it; a quality that I think is lacking in present day relationships. -Jenee'

I think that texting while driving is unnecessary and my advice is not to text while you are operating a car cause you probably could get seriously injured. -Lawrence

  9. The two articles that interested me from the ASNE national edition were Texting And Driving, Not Just A Statistic By Faith Harris and Give The Future A Chance By Justin Brooks. I feel both of the articles are good ideas because it's focusing on prevention of accidents and the school funding. Texting and driving is important because the accident rates caused by texting have gone up. The school funding is an important issue to students because its our future that is being destroyed by lowering the school budget.

  10. Alright. Here goes something;

The first article I read was "Teens Not So Invincible", by Ricky Perez of Amos Alonzo Stagg High School, Stockton, CA. The concept of the article was good, but it was stereotyping teens. Sure, we go off after school and hang out with out friends at fast food resturants and eat junk food. But that doesn't mean we don't care about our health. The author acts as though teens don't exercise, but a good majority of us do. How else are we going to keep up our looks?

Anyway, I believe it would be pretty fun to do an article bashing, I mean discussing teenage behavior.

The second article I read was "Summer Movie Reviews". I have to admit, while I do disagree with the author's ratings on some movies (Transformers), I feel that this would be another fun addition to the newspaper, as we would be able to see other people's opinions on movies.

  11. I really liked the article called Texting and Driving a Growing Danger for Teens because it is a current event that is effecting many people. The new law is even starting controversy because people are complaining that New York is becoming a parent state. The laws we are getting are things that are common sense and you wouldn't think that you would have to tell an adult that.

The other article i like is Healthy Start Aims for Prevention of STD's. I liked this article because i think it's becoming a huge problem in our schools and society.I think that its wonderful to get this information out because maybe it will discourage some people from making the wrong decisions.

  12. I think that a lot of the articles were about the same thing. However, I agree with what Wade that the article about teens not being invincible was pretty good. I think that the writing for all of them was very professional and well done, but I think that the subject matter could span over a wider variety.

  13. I think that a lot of the articles were about the same thing. Though the topics were interesting, I think we should come up with our own ideas instead of following suit and writing about the dangers of texting while driving, unhealthy eating, unprotected sex, and the difficulties of changes in the school system.

  14. I enjoyed the two articles about cheating and other various suspicious activities. It was mainly because the subject was about deception and things that aren't legal. I find that stuff interesting.

  15. My two favorite articles were, "teen Parenthood challenging" and "program provides new 'tools' for success" I liked the one on parenthood because its an issue that applies to everyone, boys and girls, who are or aren't sexually active. The writer includes stories of young women who overcame the negativities brought to teen parents. They were very strong in the fact that they were mothers as well as great students.
I think it would be nice to write an article that helps us look at something in a teenagers life, that is not usually looked at in a positive way.

I really enjoyed the article about gardening and lawn care clubs mostly, because I enjoy plants and gardening, but also because i really hope that someday School of the arts can have a club similar to it.
I nice idea for an article i thought of, inspired by this one, is common student interests that can give School of the arts ideas for more clubs, so more students will be able to choose clubs and be apart of more extra curricular activities.

  17. The first article I chose was "Texting & Driving A Growing Danger For Teens". I chose this article because I'm going to be getting my drivers permit and that's really important to me. A lot of teenagers have died due to car accidents while texting and driving. Because of this legislators keep creating laws in order to protect youths safety. As of now legislators created a law where teens must have 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian in order to obtain a juniors license. The next article i found interesting was "Cheaters never Win." I chose this article because of the fact that I'm a high school student and cheating is a very "regular" thing for some.

  18. one article that i liked was texting and driving a growing danger for teens it is a article that every one should know about because a lot of people have died due to texting and driving
another article that i liked was cheating i don't think that it is something that someone should do because if you get caught then a lot of bad things will come out of it for just one small thing.

  19. I like that some of the articles are about things that a lot of teenagers are somewhat interested in. Without sparking a teens interests it is very hard to grasp the attention of other teens. I really connected with the childhood parenting article, because I am associated with many pregnant young mothers, and I understood what the article was touching on. I also liked the STD article. I believe that it is a good thing to have a program for infected children to attend. This in a sense shows them that their not alone.

  20. The two articles that i found on intresting was the cheater never win article because cheaters never win when the get caught and in trouble about it then they realize that cheaters never win and the other article that i found intreating was the texting while driving article because it explain that texting while driving is not as safe as talking while driving.
